What are SO EAS+Y workshops?
SO EAS+Y are architectural workshops organized by the Development Policy Foundation from Warsaw. The participants of the project are the Architecture students from Georgia. The event will be held in Gremi (Kakheti). The aim of the workshops is to realise spatial project โ art installation which will be a permanent sign in the space of Gremi as an example of inclusive architecture.
About the project
The project is realised by the Development Policy Foundation www.fpr.org.pl thanks to the grant of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The grant was awarded within the programme โPromoting Polish Culture Abroad 2016 Promesa.โ
Within the project the architectural workshops will be realized with participation of young and awarded architectural studios from Poland coping with the problem of social inclusion and promotion of cultural participation of persons with disabilities.
They will propose and implement intervention in the public space which will refer to their achievements and "design philosophy," and whose beneficiaries will be persons excluded from cultural participation: the elderly, children and people with disabilities.
The workshop will be a starting point for the discussion about real access to contemporary culture in Georgia and inclusion in the context of public space.
To compete the task we have invited young architects from Poland who have extensive didactic and designing experience. We hope that with their help and commitment, workshops which will be organized in 2016 for the first time, will be expanded to other countries and gain international character and prestige.

+48 Architecture
The group has been operating since 2006 and has wide range of project and project-related activities. The field of activities covers architecture, interior design and design and, in addition, the promotion and journalistic activities. Furthermore, group designs workshops for children and strives to be actively involved in the discussion about the state of Polish public space and architecture.
The Core of the group are young architects, graduates from Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture: (Agata Filipek, (MSc. Arch. 2006), Karol Szparkowski (MSc. Arch. 2006), Kamil Miklaszewski (MSc. Arch. 2004).
Maciej Siuda
The architect and designer with rich didactical experience, including university and public consultations. He is awarded in the international competitions including: Holcim Awards Acknowledgement for the environmentally friendly architecture (school for Haiti). For the French Institute of Architecture created Devebere - design a temporary pavilion, presented at the start of Venice Architecture Biennale; carries out projects in Poland, Spain, Italy and the United States.
Studio Bud Cud
BudCud is a practice of creating projects in the fields of architecture and urban planning, since 2010, led by Mateusz Adamczyk (1981) and Agata Woลบniczka (1986).
BudCud has won many competitions in the fields of architecture and urbanism including .: prestigious international competition Europan (E9 Warsaw, I place and E11 Leeuwarden, with distinction) and the Schindler Award for Architecture, Access for All. We have won first place in an international competition for The Urban Renewal Strategy of Voronezh reservoir in Russia and our European garden design for the China (Wuhan) International Garden Expo (Garden EXPO) received the award.
Marcin Kwietowicz
Marcin Kwietowicz, a designer working in the various art fields, besides the main, commercial trend. In addition to the interior of Galilu Olfactory Perfumery in Warsaw and Poznan. He is a co-author of the lobby of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art (together with W. Kotecki and A. Salamon) and the Institute of Vanguard โ development of the Edward Krasinski studio on the roof of a block at the avenue Solidarity in Warsaw (with BAR Architecten, Rotterdam) and the Art House/Studio in Warsaw (P. Brzoza), which was awarded in the 8th edition of the competition 20 + 10 + X WA Awards. He is an author of exhibitions, (i.a., of the Polish pavilion in the Art Biennale in Venice, 2005) and film (Artur ลปmijewski's โRepetitionโ), and theatre (Ivan Vyrypaev's July) scenography. His projects were published in the Wallpaper Magazine, Architecture - Murator, Architecture & Business, as well as at the web portals (deezen.com, architektura.pl).
Karol ลปurawski
Karol Zurawski trained his skills under the supervision of contemporary minimalists, including architect of the unrealized project of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw - Christian Kerez and the winner of the Pritzker award - Peter Zumthor. His designs made with the natural materials in the effective form won prizes in the architecture and design competitions. The concept of a mobile pavilion with anthracite curtain was awarded the first place in the competition "Designing Identity/Identity of design" OperaLab contest, organized by the Grand Theatre - National Opera and BMW.
The influence of the two masters is evident in the works of ลปurawski โ in ascetic forms, respect to the treatment of materials. These characteristics are visible both in the concept of buildings such as the new wing of the Academy of Fine Arts at the Wybrzeลผe Koลciuszkowskie as well as in the objects of a completely different scale. Among the latter, can be highlighted an unusually suggestive project of the cross commemorating John Paul II and the ostensibly ordinary bench of pine.

Inclusive architecture workshops in Gremi /
แแแแแฃแแแฃแ แ แแ แฅแแขแแฅแขแฃแ แ แกแแแแแแ แแแ แแ แแแจแ
Young Polish architects and Georgian architecture students designed and built a pyramid โ an object serving as an example of inclusive architecture, within the framework of the workshops. Residents of TEMI Community centre actively participated in the building process.
The center for excluded people in Gremi, Kakheti, Georgia โTEMI Community hosted architecture workshops โSO EAS+Yโ, as a part of the project realized by Development Policy Foundation entitled: โGenuine common space: interventions of young Polish architecture studios for inclusive cultureโ, financed within the programme โPromoting Polish Culture Abroad 2016 Promesaโ of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. The workshops were conducted by the architects of + 48 Architecture Group.
Architects Karol Szparkowski and Kamil Miklaszewski, along with the architecture students from Tbilisi, designed an installation set in the local context. Its main objective was to engage local community in creation and use of common space.
This concept of work turned out as a success: TEMI inhabitants โ people with fewer opportunities, socially excluded and mentally challenged โ participated actively in the building process. The collaboration with workshops participants gave TEMI inhabitants a sense of being helpful โ which enables overcoming barriers and acceleration of social inclusion process. On the other hand, their interest and engagement show the need of realization of such initiatives and their pertinence.
Everybody took a task which (s)he was able to do โ younger and older inhabitants of TEMI centre sawed boards, hammered nails, wore stones. Even smallest tasks were of huge importance for them โ that gave the sense of belonging to the team and co-responsibility for the work result. In that way, they perceive the object as designed and created for them โ which they want to use and care for.
The building process began with the choice of exact location of the object and setting of the triangular base, supported by the stones. Subsequently, the frame and walls were set, with use of wood only, which was then burnt for conservation. The object was equipped with Sun clock and sky map, for education purposes.
The workshopsโ formula, leading to realization of the designed project, was a valuable experience for Georgian students. Those architects in spe had a rare opportunity to verify in the designed conception in practice and to participate directly in its realization.
Additionally, the collaboration with TEMI inhabitants was another value for the students. Youth from Tbilisi rarely has the chance to meet people of excluded groups, which is related with certain social taboo. The awareness of functionning of the institutions for these groups is also poor. Overcoming the awareness barriers, perception of excluded people without prejudices, cooperation based on partnership was valuable for both sides and helped to improve the social acceptance.
The effect of intensive 4-day work was creation of a pyramid of open shape, light, not bound permanently with the ground. Its location on the hill allows to see the building from the opposite hill with the historic church of Gremi. Respectively, from the building site the whole neighborhood is clearly visible.
The object is multifunctional โ its use depends on community needs: can be a solitude, resting or meeting place open anytime. This realization is an example of inclusive architecture possible to adapt on rural areas of Georgia.
The workshopsโ results were presented on the conference which took place on Technical University of Tbilisi, as a starting point to the discussion on quality and accessibility of public space in Georgia.

Conference at Technical University in Tbilisi /แแแแคแแ แแแชแแ
Polish architectural solutions in the context of accessibility for people with fewer opportunities were presented during the conference at Technical University in Tbilisi as examples of good practices in universal design.
โ
The conference at Technical University in Tbilisi with participation of Polish architects was the next phase of our project “Genuine common space: interventions of young Polish architecture studios for inclusive culture”, financed by the grant from Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, awarded under the program "Promotion of Polish culture abroad in 2016 Promesa". Local government officials, NGO representatives, Georgian students and architects were invited for a discussion on the quality of public space, with a particular focus on access for people excluded and marginalized.
โ
Introduction to the theme of the conference was to present the current legal situation, legal and cultural barriers in shaping public space in Georgia. Mr. Giorgi Kipani, a professor of urban planning faculty, presented the problem of incompatibility of creating a public space with the land use plan and the difficulties in the implementation of the construction law and regulations regarding the adaptation to the needs of people with disabilities. - Public awareness of this law is still low in Georgia. Citizens do not know the rules and do not include them in their actions, although Georgian law is getting better. What’s more, the problem sometimes concerns the officials - said Kipani.
โ
Examples of failed implementation and practical inadequacy of infrastructure in Georgia were presented by professor of architecture and urban planning faculty, Mrs. Nino Imnadze. - Bad practices of adapting public space for people with disabilities visible in Georgia indicate lack of awareness and lack of idea. Poor execution - eg. too steep ramps for people in wheelchairs, show that the implementation of the rules on the availability of space for people with reduced mobility is only a sham action.
โ
The main part of the conference was to promote Polish architectural solutions in terms of accessibility for people with limited access to culture, absent in the public space, presented by the young Polish architects, awarded in Poland and abroad: Maciej Siuda, Mateusz Adamczyk from BudCud studio, Marcin Kwietowicz, as well as Karol Szparkowski and Kamil Miklaszewski from + 48 Architecture studio. The speakers presented their design philosophy and, on the basis of their experience, showed examples of creating a public space accessible to people marginalized and excluded, to be adapted in Georgia.
โ
The realisations of Polish architects, as examples of good practices of inclusive architecture, were published on the project website: www.soeasty.eu and Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/So-easy-331201520389266/
The summary of the conference was the presentation of the results of the Gremi architectural workshops with the participation of Georgian students. The report from the workshops can be found here:

School in Haiti
The project was awarded in competition organised by Haiti-Poland Foundation and Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland. In 2015, it was appreciated by Swiss Foundation of sustainable architecture Holcim Award, as a one of eight most important recent realisations in South America.
The project tries to re-define the typology of a school building – it transforms the functional division of a typical school, where communication zone (corridor) and education zone (classrooms) is dominating, into an open form, where the particular modules in “C”-shape, create the labyrinth-type space, mixing the communication and education zones. As a result, a building was created where the whole interior serves as an education zone during lessons, and as an accessible communication zone during the breaks. This arrangement enables to convene open education, join classes into bigger lecture space and to use the surroundings.
โ
The building fills the central length of the plot, dividing it into two halves. On the opposite sides of the building there are two patios, different in its character and function: the first one is green and quiet, designed for outdoor activities, the second one – open, with green architecture elements (running track, basketball and football backyards) - for sport and recreation. The architecture in between these two different “worlds” plays a role of a communication and visual transmitter. The school is a platform joining education with fun.
โ
In the building the context of the location, climate and atmospheric phenomena specific to Haiti is used, by adapting several technical solutions. Its long form is divided into nine buildings independent in construction, adjusting the whole arrangement to seismic movements. Additionally, it is designed in the steel technology, which enables the work of construction elements on junctions, improving the system performance due to horizontal forces interaction. The building segmentation plays a role of lighting in the classrooms and creation of a natural ventilation shaft. The cascade system of the roof is used to collect the rainwater, which is used after the filtration as gray water in the toilets and to hydrate green patio by drainage system.
โ
The recurrence of construction solutions in each class module improves the building realization and enables its free phasing. As a result, we receive a rich, spatially diverse interior enabling to convene open, innovative, imagination-stimulating education, while using simple architecture and construction solutions.

Mateusz Adamczyk (BudCud)
The Quarter
Jewish Culture Festival In Cracow
The anniversary 25th Jewish Culture Festival 2015 in Cracow celebrates Kazimierz – Jewish quarter of Cracow, as well as other Jewish districts from around the world. Following the theme, BudCud designed a temporary public space in one of a few empty squares in the district. Noticing the fact that the squares of Kazimierz are its most characteristic features, unfortunately all occupied by cars, monuments or commercial activities, with the festival architects decided to create the FKลป Quarter – an architectural device for bringing social life to the site. It is a temporary public urban situation created by multiple objects organised around a central elevated square. The FKลป Quarter is located on the back of the Old Synagogue, at Dajwor Street, where no one goes, but bus drivers park tourist buses along the street.
โ
The site – green lawn with a natural slope – is a secret garden, waiting to be brought to life. With a temporary program the location was made public and used by local community and tourists. The FKลป Quarter depicts architecture hidden in local circumstances with its vernacular roofscape, frames for social engagement and spontaneous behaviour, linking the commercial and the gratuitous.
โ
BudCud introduced a petite urban situation, where different volumes surround the central platform, that can become a stage, dance floor, classroom or a cafe. Three staircases – benches, a ramp and a table tennis zone complement three houses, operating as a social library, Cheder cafe and Gelada graphic studio from Tel Aviv, where screen print workshops are held. Transparent walls and roofs provide natural light inside, but also manifest the functions of singular volumes, which during night concerts become eye-catching urban lighthouses and expressive scenography. The FKลป Quarter renders a possibility of social engagement by providing an architectural frame in forgotten public square.

Millenium Park, Zielona Góra
Millennium Park in Zielona Góra until the 1960s functioned as the Green Cross cemetery. Then it was transformed into a public park, but the memory of the place prevented the local people from using the space freely and without superstitions. The Millennium Park was left abandoned despite its location in the city centre, near the main boulevard. The condition of the park is not inviting either. Upper branches of trees let hardly any light inside the park, ground level lacks lower greenery – that is why the park seems to be dark and dangerous.
โ
Main idea was to bring back life into Millennium Park by carefully listening to the postulates of a local community and eliminate spatial obstacles preventing the park from becoming an unique, multi-functional public space. Designers behaved as mediators, rendering the needs and wishes of potential users. The manual of those was provided in a report called ‘Social vision of Millennium Park’, prepared by Salony Foundation and BWA Zielona Góra. Architects’ conclusions from the report were followed by a series of public consulting sessions throughout the whole process of designing and delivering a revitalization project. The design is not a fixed project, but an open system, which can be developed and transformed within the scheme in the prolonged time-frame.
โ
Basic rules were established to structure the park, emphasize its characteristic features and provide the city with sustainable, multi-functional public space for different users that benefit from the space without any conflicts of interest. Nowadays the park is cut by an overlapping maze of mostly unused and faded footpaths. The project reduces existing paths and transforms them into functional network. Communication is organized with the following elements: grand pedestrian & bike loop, which allow fast commuting along the borders of the park; characteristic entrance gates to the park; longitudinal boulevard and transversal paths; strolling loops of differentiated functions and themes. Strolling loops group functions which differ in their character and target profile of future users. The abstract loop is sensorial zone, which could be explored intuitively. Zone dedicated to integration of the local community with integrated communication axis going through the Park is called the Local Community/Transit Loop. The active recreation loop defines a sport zone surrounded by lush greenery. Wandering/Sense-Stimulating Loop contains all the characteristic features of Millennium Park (terraces, historic greenery arrangements). New functions inside the park are cliché of urban public spaces’ functions, modified and transformed into spontaneous and casual format of Millennium Park.
Spaces in-between functional loops are filled with rows of trailing plants or low bushes. Plants inscribe multi-layered history of the park- they mark the terraces’ borders and emphasize a historical arrangement of pathways. After some time, plants will go off the given tracks, forming green carpet covering the park. The revitalization project of Millennium Park leaves the site as multi-threaded space dedicated to differentiated users. Millennium Park becomes public space in the city center of Zielona Góra, with characteristics and qualities of lush green forests surrounding the city.

Szymany-Szczytno Airport. 3rd price, open competition
Szczytno, Poland 2013
A contemporary airport, apart from solely functional aspects, now becomes a flagship for its region. It is the buildings interiors and exterior character, the used materials, are factors which determine the travelers' of the travelers, and will build a common impression of a region.
The character of Warmia and Mazury, as well as the setting of the building, deep inside the forests both strongly inspire where to reach in terms of the form of the airport and its materials. Thanks to balanced proportions and the use of natural materials, the building blends into its surroundings and harmonizes with the space of the existing woods. The building also contains references to 30s' holiday house architecture, as it has a simple, cubic form with a lifted central segment. Wood is chosen as the main material of the airport, used for structural as well as finishing purpose.
During the construction period, use of local production potential is foreseen, which helps the investment to become a multidimentional venture and an impulse for the region's growth. The aim of the pavilion is to become the region's showpiece which includes the presentation of its economic life.
The aspect of sustainability was also an important factor taken into account while designing the airport as all materials used for its construction are renewable and are produced within Warmia and Mazury. Inspired by the principles of multi-plane aircrafts, the flexible construction module enables easy to achieve changes within its functional system. This way, the designed terminal can easily adapt to the changing needs of the user.

โConversion of synagogue in Biaลystok, 2nd mention, open competition, Biaลystok, Poland 2014
Today's Bialystok, has, considering Polish circumstances, maintained its multicultural character. A visible Orthodox community, still functioning Tatar circles - all are but a reminiscence of the pre-war city's local colour. The German occupation times and the extermination of the Jews have destroyed an environment which set the tone for pre-war Bialystok. One needs to remember, that it was the Jewish community, that made the elite of the urban patricians of the majority of Polish cities - and Bialystok was no exception. What is left, however, is the position of Bialystok as a gate to the East. The current political situation seems to underline this role of the city and, as in the 19th century, creates huge opportunities.
The building of the Beit Szmulel synagogue was one of about one hundred prayer houses for the Jewish population of the city, counting approximately 60 thousands of people. The synagogue was a centre which gathered the elite of Jewish community in the city. The project proposed a construction of the object in the Mauritanian style, popular those days, of elevations finished with clinker brick and rich details, covered by high hip roof. The building was carried out modestly – the elevations have been plastered - but retained the stylistic convention and high hip roof.
During the German occupation, the building was burned down, however has not been completely destroyed. Like most of its kind in the postwar period, it was rebuilt as sports hall.
The building of the Beit Szmulel synagoque was devastated and deprived of its original appearance. Its historical function which defined its interior arrangement, is also a matter of the past. The only witnesses of history are the bare, brick walls, currently hidden under layers of post-war plaster. Just as an archaeologist removes earth layer after layer, in order to reveal the preserved evidence of history, we want to take off post-war coat layers in order to reveal the elements that remember the original city and the tragedy of the occupation times. The building is to act as a tome which tells a story of the city that is no more. At the same time, it is to be filled by life of the city that lives.

Expansion of senior daycare centre, Warszawa-Wesoลa
The existing building – villa subjected to protection of the Conservator-Restorer under registration in Municipality Heritage Record - is a characteristic element of the corner of Armii Krajowej and I Puลku Praskiego streets. It is an object of compact block, built on a square plan. The compositional axis of the building is set by a triangular peak in elevation from side of I Puลku Praskiego str. and the entry accentuated by a terrace supported on redoubled columns.
The designed expansion involves construction of a simple block on a rectangular plan, stringed on the extension of the composition axis of the existing building. The two blocks form the shape of “L” letter, closing with its wings the inner courtyard with a terrace, that is open to the west.
The planned expansion opens an extended complex of DPS / DPDS towards Armii Krajowej str., through the new entrance for DPDS users and wide opening of the multi-purpose room. After the expansion, the object is to become a building fully friendly for users of all ages. In terms of energy consumption, the designed object is a zero-energy building.
